OLC Parish Librarians
The question of “Why is it important to you to volunteer your time in the OLC Parish Library?” was posed to each of the parish librarians. Their responses…
Amy Launiere
“I was raised Catholic, but a previous (invalid) marriage led my 10 year old son (he’s 20 now) and me to attend a Protestant church. While there, we experienced the enjoyment of a close-knit Christian community and having a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. But at the same time, anti-Catholicism reared its ugly head. I wanted to defend my Catholic faith, but I was very ill equipped to do so. That and the fact that I realized it was my responsibility to educate my son with the proper information prompted my desire to learn my faith. I started digging in by reading Catholic books (including the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church), watched EWTN (television station), listened to EWTN radio, used EWTN.com to ask questions and get answers from Catholic experts, listened to Catholic CDs, watched Catholic DVDs, and then joined a small group community from OLC which focuses on continuous learning of our Catholic faith. Wow, was I surprised at what I learned! This education compelled my son and me to return to the Catholic Church permanently, and we couldn’t be happier. I was able to teach my son our Catholic faith at the same time I was learning it. I desire to keep growing in our faith, and I am happy to help others on their faith journeys by helping in our parish library. ”

“Like Amy, I was also raised a Catholic and was blessed with 12 years of a wonderful Catholic education.
Unfortunately, through the years I became busy with a family and career and neglected to continue to grow in my faith. I also found myself confronted with serious questions from others, both family and friends, regarding the dogmas of our faith and I found myself lacking in the knowledge necessary to explain or defend the Church’s position. I realized that I needed to strengthen my knowledge and so when I retired from teaching one of my goals was to invigorate my faith through study and reading. Being involved in the rebirth of the parish library has been a blessing for me. What a wealth of information and inspiration I have found! I had no idea what treasure this small library contains. As the old saying goes I have received more than I have given, and know I will continue to.
I cannot wait to be a part of the reopening of the library and hopefully the community experience of learning and sharing that it will bring.”

“My name is Delores Quinn and I am one of the original members of OLC parish. When we were growing up, our mother instilled in us a love of good books and the joy of reading them. I can remember when there was no such thing as a parish library here at OLC. The only available access to Catholic-oriented books was to search through our school library or purchase them at a Catholic bookstore. How blessed we are at this time to have a parish library that is growing larger in size each year. As parishioners, we can now easily search for a great variety of Catholic material in person at our own library, or on the internet via our own website. Any of us can do so at no cost!!! Hope to see you at the library soon and often.”

“Carl and I like to work in a service ministry that keeps us involved with our OLC parish family. We also have felt the need for further information and education in our Catholic faith. So when Amy asked us to help out in the parish library, we felt it would be a good opportunity to fulfill both desires. We hope to share our faith, to grow and learn and help others to do the same.”

"My husband and I moved to Cedar Springs and became members of OLC in November of 2006. Not knowing anyone in the congregation, I felt a need to get involved in the parish community and the parish library seemed like a good place to start. Now that I have had the opportunity to work in the library for awhile, I have come to see how lucky the members of OLC are to have such a wonderful resource to learn more about the Church and their faith. I hope that all parish members, both young and old, will take advantage of what the library has to offer. I know I will."
